Plants

A tree is a precious resource. Trees are the largest and longest living organisms on earth. Trees help us breathe and provide a home for quite a few diverse kinds of animals and insects. It provides shade, thereby bringing down the temperature. It acts as a barrier against noise and also absorbs air pollutants.Every part of it plays a role in our survival.

The Roots:

The Root is the organ of a plant that typically lies below the surface of the soil. This is not always the case, however, since a root can also be aerial (growing above the ground) or aerating (growing up above the ground or especially above water). So, it is better to define root as a part of a plant body that bears no leaves, and therefore also lacks nodes.

The functions of the roots are:
  • Anchor the plant in the Soil.
  • Prevent soil erosion, thereby maintaining its fertility.
  • Hold moisture, thereby conserving ground water.
  • Are used for making medicines.
  • Some roots are also Edible.

The Leaves:

A leaf is an above-ground plant organ specialized for photosynthesis. For this purpose, a leaf is typically flat (laminar) and thin. Leaves can store food and water, and are modified in some plants for other purposes. Some of the functions of Leaves are:

  • Convert the sun's energy to food through photosynthesis.
  • Convert carbon dioxide into oxygen, making it possible for us to breathe and live.
  • Provide fodder for cattle.
  • Are used as green manure.
  • Transpiration & Guttation takes place on the leaves.

Photosynthesis:

Photosynthesis is a process that converts carbon dioxide into organic compounds, especially sugars, using the energy from sunlight.
Carbohydrates are synthesized from carbon dioxide and water by utilizing the the radiant energy of light, which is captured by the chlorophyll in the cells of the green leaves. Photochemical reactions are initiated by which oxygen is released from water and light energy is converted to chemical energy, and amino acids are synthesized by the combination of intermediate products with elements such as nitrogen, derived from mineral salts. Most of the oxygen in the atmosphere is derived from photosynthesis.

Flowers:
A flower, sometimes known as a bloom or blossom, is the reproductive structure found in flowering plants.

  • The biological function of a flower is to mediate the union of male sperm with female ovum in order to produce seeds.
  • In addition to serving as the reproductive organs of flowering plants, flowers have long been admired and used by humans, mainly to beautify their environment but also as a source of food.
  • They even provide food for birds and insects.
  • They are used for making drugs & dyes.
  • Also as tokens of love or esteem.
  • For wedding flowers for the bridal party, and decorations for the hall.
  • As brightening decorations within the home.
  • As a gift of remembrance for bon voyage parties, welcome home parties, and "thinking of you" gifts.
  • For funeral flowers and expressions of sympathy for the grieving.
  • For worshiping goddesses. In Hindu culture it is very common to bring flowers as a gift to temples.

Fruits:
Fruits are the means by which flowering plants disseminate seeds.

  • Provide food for man and animals.
  • Many fruits are used to make beverages, such as fruit juices  or alcoholic beverages, such as wine or brandy.
  • Apples are often used to make vinegar.
  • Fruits are also used for gift giving.

Branches:

A branch  or tree branch  is a woody structural member connected to but not part of the central trunk of a tree. Large branches are known as boughs and small branches are known as twigs.
The branches of a tree provide firewood for cooking.

The Bark:

Bark is the outermost layers of stems and roots of woody plants.

  • It is used for making medicines.
  • It is tapped for latex (as in rubber).
  • The bark of some trees is edible.
  • The bark of some trees notably oak  is a source of tannic acid, which is used in tanning.

Think Green:
Planting trees is one of the most vital roles in saving our environment. The following are some tips & cost-effective ways to do better to the environment.

  • If you are having a big enough garden, plant more trees so that they can cool your homes at really considerable rates.
  • Select to grow plants that suit your garden, especially the soil. Seek opinions from a nearby horticultural society.
  • If you have a small garden, grow plants & creepers instead of trees. Every green plant helps to reduce the carbon dioxide in the environment.
  • If you are planning for a garden, opt for an extra place for plants and not for a lawn.
  • If your garden lacks water, have drought resistant plants in there.
  • If you live in an apartment, grow potted plants in your balcony. If the balcony is spacious enough build up your garden there itself.
  • You can even opt for indoor plants as they help reduce the indoor pollution.
  • Start a tree planting program in your area. And grow plants on the roadsides, schools, parks, etc...
  • Use paper carefully; saving papers is saving trees.
  • If you see cutting down of trees, report immediately to the concerned authorities.
  • Make 'Planting Trees' a commitment.

A tree is an entire industry if it went on strike, we would die.
We must preserve it.

The following are the reasons why we cut the trees for. You can even see the alternatives for the same without the cutting of them.

  • We cut trees for Firewood & Charcoal which form the greatest percent of fuel used for cooking. The alternative for this is using only the branches or alternative energy sources such as Bio-gas.
  • We cut trees for pulp & paper too. Instead, we can use recycled papers & agriculture wastes.
  • Timber from trees are largely used during Constructions. The alternative for timber can be Steel, which is a renewable resource.
